Servant Leadership

Among the many leadership styles, there is one that interests me the most; it is servant leadership. Servant leaders are very different from other leaders because they position themselves not above the rest of the group, but as a part of the community trying to reach out to the members and genuinely help them with their problems.

Servant leadership is a leadership of a person who puts the people first and acts in accordance to their demands and desires. The individual analyzes the followers and sees whether they have some unresolved issues or problems that require help. The necessity to assist the others will be the key motivator influencing and encouraging the leader.

In the servant leadership, the leader does not merely guide the others or gives them advice, but tries to involve them and make them participate in various initiatives for their own benefits. The leader cares about the people the most, so he or she tries to make them active, support them and help express themselves, help the followers to face their fears and problems and provide them with help and practical advice to solve the issues.

Servant leadership does not put the leader on top, and make the people around the highest priority. Therefore, an individual who practices this leadership style often makes the decision that may not be beneficial for one, but bring positive consequences and results for the people surrounding the leader. Hence, this leadership requires the chiefs to sacrifice themselves, being selfless.

As a result, the servant leader may experience some difficulties while making the decisions because he or she always has to make the best ones based on the followers. On the other hand, they may be bad for themselves, and that may prevent the leaders from making particular choices. In this situation, a chief still has to make a choice in favor of the people because it is the key of servant leadership style.

Servant leaders are well-known and recognized in the world as peacemakers and activists who cared about peace, freedom, justice and equality for people. The whole idea of servant leadership can be derived from Jesus Christ who spoke about serving people and thinking about them first instead of personal gains and achievements as it is still widely practiced in many different leadership styles. The story of Jesus Christ, described in Bible, where Jesus was crucified is a good example of servant leadership. Jesus asked God to spare him from this horror, but he knew it was God’s desire that would save people as a result, and he followed it despite everything. It shows the servant leadership on practice because the leader sacrifices oneself for the benefits and well-being of other people.

Other examples of servant leaders are Mother Theresa, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. who also sacrificed themselves and did everything for the people. They also thought about the most peaceful methods of making a change and improving the societies, which showed that they cared not only about their followers, but the people in general.

A servant leader would use altruism as an ethical perspective for making the decisions. This perspective is about selflessness, and that is a feature of servant leadership. Altruism means that the person cares about the well-being and improvement of other people’s lives, and that the person values others more than oneself because he or she acts and makes the decisions that would benefit the community instead of satisfying the individual.

Altruism influences the person’s behavior because an individual thinks in terms of others and does not pay attention to one’s goals and desires as much as the needs of the community. It is an important part of servant leadership, which requires the same way of thinking from the leader; and the studies have shown that being altruistic is actually beneficial for the leader as a result.

Servant leaders have to be altruistic because they have to place the people in front of them and make the decisions thinking about the people first. Therefore, altruism determines the whole concept of servant leadership, which is helping people and being there to support and encourage them when needed.

I believe that servant leadership and altruism are very interesting characteristics of the people’s actions and behavior because they show how a person can be selfless and act for the benefits of others without expecting so,ething in return and viewing the advantages of others as more important than those of oneself. These concepts show that people can act because of humane reasons instead of personal gains, and that the great actions can be accomplished based on the intentions of the greater good and are not manipulated or created by somebody on purpose.

Thus, it is interesting to analyze servant leadership in the current situation where the modern world exists in extreme competition and requires the people to make the decisions for the benefits of the organizations they lead or their own ones. In such conditions, it is difficult to be a servant leader because a person is often required to think of oneself first, and the ideas of altruism and caring about others are often overlooked or even ridiculed. Nevertheless, the servant leadership is an effective example of a leadership style, which shows that the people can act selflessly and make the decisions for the benefits of others.
