It attains this goal by giving a general definition of the concept of leadership and explaining various leadership forms that health care organizations employ nowadays. This paper finally reveals the importance of political awareness among nurse leaders.

Introduction

Leadership in health care organizations is very significant since it does not only enhance improvement in services but also facilitates job satisfaction. Leadership refers to the ability of an individual to demonstrate a specific set of traits and modes of behavior that reflect their performance of certain roles which influence attitudes and behavior of others.

Leadership Styles in Health Care Organizations

In health care organizations, one can view leadership from two perspectives based on either functions or styles employed. Therefore, functional leadership can be informational, interpersonal and decisional. The informational type mainly involves making an inquiry and dissemination of information between the organization and an external organ. Interpersonal leadership, on the other hand, includes the performance of social and legal duties which involve training, motivating and directing subordinates. Talking about decisional leadership, it is entrepreneurial in nature hence initiates new ideas, allocates resources and solves disputes within the professionals.

While analyzing leadership owing to the style, it can be transactional, transformational or renaissance in nature. In this case, transactional leadership takes a top-down model while transformational leadership is democratic hence involves followers in attaining a common goal. Renaissance leadership, on the other hand, utilizes charisma of the leader to influence and collaborate with key decision-makers in order to realize changes.

Leadership can also be formal or informal. In formal leadership, there is official institutionalization and legalization of the authority of the leader, while informal leadership is realized when peers voluntarily follow a person without institutionalization or legalization of the authority.

Conclusion

Nurse leaders should be involved in political awareness irrespective of the form of leadership they take. Since decisions made by legislative bodies affect health care at various levels, political awareness is significant in advocating for a noticeable improvement of patient care, better working conditions, motivation and development of the nursing profession.
