John Lennon is one of the most influential musicians had ever been known. Lennon, being an idol for thousands of teenagers, has had his favorite styles and pieces of music, too. In this paper, the preferred music of John Lennon and his favorite radio station Radio Luxembourg will be explored. Also, the difference between the audience in 1950s and 1960s will be explained.
Lennon was a real fan of rock and roll music. Such names as Carl Perkins, Johnnie Ray, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Frankie Laine are the ones which dictated direction of rock and roll development in 1950s and 1960s. Some of Lennon’s favorite songs were “Birth of Rock and Roll”, “Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins, and “Going On” by Lotta Shakin. They are easy and have a positive message. Dancing and light music was the ground from which Lennon built his thoughtful lyrics and distinct style. “Birth of Rock and Roll,” for example, describes those times, when this music was doing its first steps with such figures as Elvis Presley, Johny Cash, and Carl Perkins. His next song, “Blues Suede Shoes”, was considered to be the first rockabilly song that combined rock and country music.
Rock and Roll Idols
Moreover, Lennon has had his favorite American rock and roll radio station. Radio Luxembourg was founded in 1933, and it was one of the first commercial radio stations in Britain and Ireland. Starting from 1930s till 1960s, it was very popular and transmitted its entertaining programs and music through the large and different audience. During 50s and 60s, this radio station broadcasted the rock and roll which was so preferable by the founder of The Beatles. In 1950s, the music as well as the audience were eager to be light and fun, but in 1960s, it became more psychedelic and hard for perception. That is the main reason Lennon is considered to be one of the most powerful rock and roll idols – he tried to show all the depth of rock and roll by applying the lyrics and charming rhythms.
To sum up, it should be mentioned that Lennon being rock and roll musician, liked this style himself and always listened to new bands on the radio. Being knowledgeable about modern styles, he discovered new ways to express and to show them.
